3D positional software for RC helicopters

Anybody know if there is 3D positional software for RC helicopters. For example, as opposed to moving the helicopter with the controller, you can plug in coordinates in a computer and the helicopter will move there by itself. For instance, you could plug in xyz coordinates (eg. 5ft up, 10 ft to the left, 4 ft forward). Just wondering if it's possible.

Re: 3D positional software for RC helicopters

Hi tmh,

Welcome

To answer the question... Yes there is software out there which can do what you suggest however, niether the software nor the machines that can do it are within the realms of a normal hobbyist. What you are talking about is an autonomous UAV. Such machines exist... Look up Yamaha RMAX, but the cost for them is high (think $150000+).
The problem with doing what you are talking about is threefold. First, the machine needs to know where it is Very precisely in relation to its surroundings. This problem is got around by a true model heli by the pilot. Second to be able for example to hover in one place, not only does the machine need to know where it is but it needs to know what the wind at the time is doing to it (again this is got around by the pilot) Third, the heli needs to be able to relay its data back to the software so that the software knows where the machine is. This would require a 2 way data link (a problem which is removed all together when a pilot is involved)

All these problems are solvable but at a cost. The closest thing currently that a hobbyist can get to this is the use of an autopilot like this.. http://www.modelhelicopters.co.uk/ac...utopilots.html

This is basically a 3 axis gyro and can keep the heli in a stable hover but it doesnt have any idea whats going on around the heli.

Hope this helps... Azzy

Thanks for the info. I'll look into it. Also any idea if there's a smaller one. That yamaha's a tank.

Sure, it can be done....

Do a web search for autopilots... I know there is a least
one that can track GPS co-ordinates and if I remember
right its less than 1000 U.S. dollars.

They used to advertise in the model magazines a lot.
