The Walkera 4 - What is SO Bad?

Hey all,

Recieved the Helicopter this morning at 7:20 having ordered it only 1 day ago, opened the box - nice gleaming fresh heli with all the standard nuts and bolts you'd expect although sadly the Charger has a French Plug.

Having removed the blades I tested out the Servos & Motors which in my opinion is better than accidentally smashing your blades into smithereens, I trimmed accordingly on my TX then put the Blades back together.

I turned the kit back on, Servos twitched a little and the red lamp came on, I began to speed up the motors and thank god the heli started to lift off the ground although when sitting on carpet beware that the tail "Knighthead" digs into the floor.
Speaking of which the Knighthead is basically sellotaped on to one side with the same quint design as the canopy.

The motors seem to operate fine as I kept revving up and down almost concurrently showing that they are pretty good and haven't burnt out at all!

So far I have crashed into my Plastic Chair at Full RPM, my oak desk and my bed and still the blades have just swept back with not a single scratch; most probably as they are the strengthened pair.
So all in all, considering its toughness & inability to fall to bits I believe this is a great little helicopter as long as you TRIM THE TX, most people complain that this is a crap heli; although I expect none of them have flown it but have just incedntally got their views off some "N00B" who has and failed terribly!

Having bought this at £60 I believe this to be a great bargain.

TIPS:

Buy a nice thin 2000mAh battery pack to give upto 40 Minutes flight time!

When setting Basic Trim and testing functions it is a good idea to remove the main rotor blades.

Adjust the rotor blades so they are tight but can be easily be swept back if they were to get stuck or hit a foreign object.

In my opinion I suggest Trimming and doing some test flights indoors first.

Lastly whilst in the begginner stages remove the Canopy as I feel this helps the "Pilot" understand what he/she is dealing with.

Buy a nice thin 2000mAh battery pack to give upto 40 Minutes flight time!
(Having checked the weight and size first)

Hope you liked my lil' review - more thoughts to come!

Bah! - The 650mAh gives 15 Minutes, so quadruple that will give at least half an hour.

Do you have this heli?

You seem to be the one making all the fuss about these when they are perfectly good helis!

Re: The Walkera 4 - What is SO Bad?

you might find that you need to land let motors cool and take off again but if that 2000 fits then ok. most common size lipo for use on that size is 1200 to 1500. I recomend heatsinks for your motors to keep them runing longer. From what I've read the #4 is a tank of a heli, takes a beating and keeps on going. only other thing I can say is good nimh batteries for the tx as they will help keep good signal and save you money over time.

Re: The Walkera 4 - What is SO Bad?

I dont think people are bad mouthing, there just pre-warning you of the "known faults".
It does sound like you`ve found a good example, not bad .

Now lets hope u stop crashing soon....she will break (they all do in one way or another), be forwarned. And if your walkera is ok, just keep a eye out on the said faults that can appear...(glitchy servos ect), if they dont good, if they do at least ur ready for it..

Glad ur happy, just remember fly not crash.........

Cool Re: The Walkera 4 - What is SO Bad?

Yes,I loved my #4 when I got it-get yourself some extra tail motors and servos, you will need them!I can vouch that the #4 is a tough bird but the tail motor burns up in 10-15 flights and servos tend to go bad shortly thereafter.

Re: The Walkera 4 - What is SO Bad?

hello

these are just my thoughts on this bird (having own one)

*she is great to fly! i have mine running smooth as ever after crashing into a few walls she worked even better (yes that is strange) DONT TRY THIS AT HOME!!

*servos are a major problem with this bird (probably you guys have delt with the ns-05) i have had to replace both walkeras and have burned up another GWS one

*the TX is good but make sure you keep check on the battery indicator the heli can do some strange things when it isnt under you control!

*yes the heli is built tough and you can fix almost everything with thin carbon fiber rods (landing gear and stuff)

*very easy to setup 1,put battery into place 2,turn on tx 3,plug in heli battery and off you go (providing you have check the heli after last flight)

*tail and main motors provide a good amount of power (something this heli isnt lacking ) and with the right tail motor you heli can fly hands off for at least 10 seconds

*I have had no problems with this helis RX box so when people tell you about the bad electronics they put in these birds i dont think they mean the RX just the servos

*practicing on this much smaller heli has probably been much harder but (1) much more funer and a better expirence (2) a better heli to learn on due to how much parts cost and easier to fix (3) and i think i may have learnt more flying on this heli

cheers-Jason
hope you like it

Re: The Walkera 4 - What is SO Bad?

as far as bad electronics go. the servos **** and there stand alone esc's and gyros (dont know about the new one on the 60) dont last. as for the rx. eather you get it and its good or you get it and its bad (*censored* up from the factory) but once you have a good rx or 4 in 1 they do keep going. most comon problems with walkera is quality controll or the lack there of. but once you set them up wright they fly nice. Just remember to do a good preflight check. I missed one crack that was the doom of my 22e. But that can happen to any heli. So no walkera's arnt bad just porly assimbled. set it up good and replace the servos (that dont realy cost to much) and fly your hart out. Why, cuz its cheep and a bear bone replacement is cheaper yet. oh and dont expect to be a pro pilot on day 2. I have seen to many people clame problems when its not the heli. I call it a ttdtf problem, "They are too dumb to fly" . its sorta like a bcac error on a computer. You know "betwean chair and computer" I dont blame my heli for my dumb dumbs. But normaly its just brain to thumb miscomunication.
Have fun flying.
