Tail rotor blade What caused it. Did you find out? Also how did it fly whilst you got it back to earth?

I was running a set of pretty worn out carbon tail blades - when I checked it out afterward, I found the one that came off had two cracks running all the way down from the bolt hole to the bottom end of the blade! It broke along those crack and left a chunk of the blade in the grip! I guess i should start doing pre-flight checks, huh? Getting it down wasn't too hard though - It just pirouetted. It wasn't as bad a pirouette as if I didn't have a tail rotor at all - I put in full right so the remaining one could at least help with getting it down. After a while i got it down, but since it was spinning when it touched the ground, the heli flipped over. I guess it could have been worse - only cost me about $35 for the new blade grips, flybar, and PLASTIC t/r blades! How about you DAZ? Have any weird stories to tell us??

Blades! I only have one story about bad blades and since this happened in the early days of my flying it taught me a lesson. Whilst doing early level hovering and improving I noticed what I thought was a change in tracking due to the inputs I gave. I did lots of reading and not one thing was mentioned about it. So I checked the blades. Low and behold. There was a crack running the length of the blade that was only inches from completely seperating. The best I can guess is that as this was in flight it was moveing and changing the pitch of the blade and this caused what looked to me like one blade going out of track. No crash, Thankfully. However this was why I often wondered what would happen if I lost a blade. Thanks and happy flying, Daz
