| I have a Shuttle Top-Start which has a socket where the starter shaft goes into. The socket in turn connects to a shaft that turns the engine.
The socket is held in place by a grub nut.
A couple of things that has caused it to appear to just spin around:
- My starter motor's leads to the battery are reversed, so my starter motor spins around the wrong way which, because of the automatic clutch, just spins around and around. Solution is to turn detach the starter motor's hex shaft and insert it and turn it by hand to confirm the correct direction it should go.
- My engine has been too stiff which means the grub nut will slip around the shaft. Again to confirm this I detach the hex shaft from teh starter motor, insert it into the socket on the heli, and see if I can turn the engine by hand. If I can't, something's wrong. (In my heli it was because it had been sitting for almost a year, and presumably some rust had set in or something - I'd left fuel in the engine without realising it attracts moisture which in turns causes rust).
- Finally, if you can turn it over by hand and you've checked the starter motor's turning in the right direction, then perhaps simply the grub nut that connects the socket to the shaft isn't tight enough. In my experience, hand tight with an allan key is good enough. |
