Post setting up collective pitch

I've recently purchases a zoom/zap shogun and am having trouble with deciding where the collective pitch goes on the transmitter. First off, I've never had a collective pitch heli before so I really don't even know what collective pitch does for the heli. Secondly, I don't really know how to program it into the the transmitter. Does it work in unison with the throttle? or should I program it to a switch. I'm just not exactly sure what to do with it.
I also need advice about the speed control. I have it all setup, but I can't seem to find a good way to mount it to the bottom of the heli. Any advice would help.
Thanks,
NIUpilot

Re: setting up collective pitch

Hi,
i used to fly heli's about 10 years ago and now am back into them. i just purchased a hawksport with a futabo 7caF. i am in the air hovering it and just finally got the revo set.
now, about collective. it is coupled with the throttle via the radio and is not set with a switch. it is always on. as the throtte moves up the pitch increaes. now when you get to forward and inverted flight things get different, so lets stick to hover settings. you simply go to your pitch curve settings in your radio. your curve may have 3 points or 5 or more depending on your radio. i have 5. you start with idle throttel and set a pitch then move to the next point and set a pitch and so on. you need a pitch meter for your blades. this way as the throttle increases and rpm goes up so does your pitch. the more pitch and rpm the lighter the heli gets and up you go. you should be hovering about 3 feet at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. goto rc modeler web site and get the heli book there. it is great and helps get all the setups done. generally you will have +2 degrees at idle and +6 at half thottle.
hope this helps. dont know anything about the speed control.

Re: setting up collective pitch

the shogun is an electric heli i believe. the instruction manual for your heli should give average pitch settings to follow. if not and if electric is same as gas, then idle should be +2 degrees and 1/2 throttle should be +6 degrees. some people say 3/4 throttle should be +6 but that is preference only.

look for the most pitch you can get from your setup. the avearage gas will go up to 12-15 degrees pitch. and +6 is used to hover. you can interprolate from that for electric. i would assume that less pitch is required for an electric since it is lighter.

Re: setting up collective pitch

hi,
ive got a zoom400, ive set my collective pitch as follows, idle is 0 degress, mid throttle is 4 degress and max throttle is 7 degress.

if it is the same as mine the collective is set up using the supplied carboard pitch guage, and adjusing the bearing holder in the big gap in the middle to obtain the desired pitch settings. the only thing to really watch out for is to apply to much pitch to not enough throttle and it will lag the motor.

hope this helps in some way the instructions also explains how to setup the collective pitch.

ive mounted the speed controller underneth the main body with double sided sticky tape
