Set up Help

I have put a new main shaft and feathering shaft onto my nexus 30 but when I try to lift her off she seems to just be bogging down and giving no lift.She revs well but will just not lift off at all.Any help is much appreciated.I have a model shop near me but they want £40 just to set her up which if it is something iIcan do I would rather learn to set it up myself as its all new to me the heli scene.Could I need to to set the pitch up on my blades and also how do I check the blade tracking on her as she has also had a new set of blades on her

I also have Nexus I would check your pitch as the instructions +8 is about

the highset I could get. Also I do not know your radio but if you can

adjust the pitch curve I had to this in order to fit my throttle
curve. Still not quite there still fine tuning it out at this point in time!

Try this and should get you in a hover where you track the blades.

When tracking and they noticable off pick one of the blades and adjust

the pitch linkage aand if it gets worse spool down and put it back originally

and move the other one and mark this one white dot or pen mark on the blade

and adjust accordingly till they track. Make sure your blades are

balanced before tracking them Very Important to do this step!

Thanks for that.I will give it a go when the weather gets a bit better. Want to try to get a bit more practice in this summer as not had much time of late and its a shame to have here sat gathering dust.I find the nexus very forgiving for begginers don't know what you think to them?

I had a nexus as my very first heli, I loved it to bits. I got 16 hrs out of it, total flight time....and then during an Autorotation exercise I trashed the poor thing

Really though, it was a great heli and helped me get the bug.

Ok, there are one or two things about the nexus:

the plastic guides within the boom can move...not good as the wire drive shaft will start whipping causing a bad vibe...either use tubing...nice snug size to act as spacers to keep the guides in place OR with some patience, use small screws...you need to be careful with sizing. but by drilling a hole through the boom for each guide its possible to insert the screw so it goes into the guides flange/skirt.

Use either grease or heavy oil to lube the wire drive...inspect this from time to time...the wire can cause friction and melt the guides otherwise...I have seen this happen.


The pitch issue...its best that any time you work on the rotor system that you go through the pitch settings....if the blades are wooden and you have to glue and screw the blade holders onto the blades...you might not get an accurate setup...so a pitch guage is a must.

mid stick should see about +5 to +6 degrees top stick should see +10...I wouldnt bother with too much pitch.

Bottom stick? if you are learning then maybe 0 degrees would be ok.

Later on you would want -4 or -5 degrees for bottom stick...this is for doing Autos.

I dont Auto on purpose but its a sensible thing to get used to...I use a sim for mine.

One day that engine could quit, so at least going through the motions could save your heli...or at least make a difference between a total wreck or a repairable heli.

the minus degrees would give you that drive to keep the rotor RPM nice and high...without letting the heli fall too fast which can cause more problems.

I like the Nexus. Not the best but not the worst either.
It will need the upgrades to it for the most part to help it
fly better and last longer. I still use the futaba 148 servos
but i fly it slow and easy. It is a gracefully bird to aprreciate
and besides it gives me something to piddle with other than
my titan 50 and something else to fly when i crash my 50

The worst thing is finding parts for them, I hear that you can get main gears now...the blades are 500mm from what I recall...you can still get those.

Its things like side frames and so on that could be hard to find...some items are easy enough to replace. stock Century itmes for the Hawk will fit the boom...so if a tail unit got trashed its not the end of the world...also things like struts for the skids...there are loads of aftermarket itms that fit ok.

What is handy is to fit a hoop to the skids...I use this a lot...and I have loads of time under my belt. for nose in hovering and landing its a good idea...you only have to make a silly mistake for a skid to catch and the heli can get ruined in a split second.

To make the hoop just use flexible plastic pipe like 15 mm stuff that the plumbing trade uses....aim to make a hoop about the same diameter as the rotor...maybe a touch smaller...then using some canes you can then lash this to the skids...use elastic to actually fasten to the skids themselves...you should get a nice base that slides easily if you get an awkward touchdown...for low hovering about its of great value...certainly saved me from many a prang

let hook up with him and maybe with the parts i have and the heli parts
from him if need some i could send you some.

It is odd ball size mainrotor blades are 535mm.
I heard you could use 550mm. I am doing research on this.

You might need a slightly longer boom thats all...apart from the fact of clearing the tail rotor the longer boom would give some more leverage to counter the torque.
