Hi tbone, It looks like "Heading Lock" is an invention / feature brought about by gyro manufacturer CSM. I found the following article tonight which gave me a bit of an insight (although I'm still looking for a technical explanation - e.g., a press article about it in model heli flying magazines). http://www.w3mh.co.uk/articles/download/csm_gyro.pdf

Another article tbone (I'm asking the same question as you, hence the reason I've spent the past 4 hours surfing the net looking it up :-)) What makes Heading Hold gyros special?

Hey dudes, as an addendum, I went checking my heli out with a profi dude (David Dutrieux, belgian 6fold champion 3d etc, he's got a heli shop and I took some lessons from him) I turned out that my gyro didnt work at all. Now I bought a new gyro http://updaterc.com/catalog/gyro&servo.htm the gy 240 Heading hold. works great and makes the tail rock steady even in wind !!
