Problem with GY401

Hi everybody. I have a question for you

I have a Raptor 30 V2 with a RD6000 radio. The gyro is the Futaba GY401 and the rudder servo is a Hitec 525.

The problem is that when the Heli is in hover it has a slow yaw movement. The nose of the heli goes clockwise with small 'hits' of about a couple of degrees every 5 seconds or so.

The tail blades are slightly damaged because they hit the ground a couple of times, but I dont think this is the cause.

Any ideas?. Thanks a lot.

damaged tail blades will cause vibration and will do funny things
also the 401 needs a verry fast servo to perform properly
the servo they recomend and it comes with in the combo pack
is at 0.08 sec for speed if your servo is to slow it will not respond as fast as info comming from gyro, in avcs mode this could kill your servo in the long run, also on the 401 there is a small switch
that must be switched for ether digital servo or standard servo make sure you have the proper setting.can you switch from avcs to normal mode with your radio.

must will get back to you later

Hello again, steff !!. I think I'm giving you a lot of work this week.

The servo was the one recommended from the guy in my local shop but it is 0.16 seconds. He told me it was the one he mounted in his own heli (with the same gyro) and works right for him. I think he's telling the truth.

The switch for digital/normal servo is in the right position. I'm pretty sure for that.

There is another screw to adjust the delay. Do you think this will help to adjust the clockwise drift?. What about the sensivity in the radio?.

I know I can put the gyro in normal mode but have been told that it would be much difficult to control the heli.

Another question. When I swith off the radio leaving the power on to the servos, all of them go crazy (moveing fast back and forth) as if they were responding to some kind of interferences. Is this normal?

Thank you again for your help.

dont worry vic this is part of the fun in this hobby we get to meet and help fellow heli maniacs

the ds\normal switch---the important thing here is make sure to know what kind of servo you have if digital than it goes in ds mode and viceversa.

delay hummm dont play with thais one just yet,the driff you re having is probably due to not having your tail servo arm centered at half stick and pitch slider at 90 deg on the tail rotor gear box,in avcs mode this should be a prob but in normal mode you have
revo mix that changes the pitch as you throtle up.if you can adjust % of gyro in radio set one in 20% for normal mode and the other at 80% for avcs. now in avcs mode the servo will not centre it self but you need to open radio than heli wait a feew seconds for light to stop flashing, once this is done your gyro is ready.not switch to normal you will see the servo move and centre itself.
now adjust lenght of push rod so bell crank in the rear is 90 deg, this might not be perfect yet but we will get there. now hover the heli see wich direction it driffs in land disconect ball link and adjust lenght till the driff disapeers.

this alone should help the tail.
0.16 sec for this gyro is a little slow not saying it wont work but you will never get the performance this 401 is capable of giving.
but since youre learning it will be fine till you start 3d ing .
at 0.16 it is a little slow so after all this if still the same and tail fish tails (wigles) try increasing gain little by litte and remember where you started so if you dont see anny difference put it back where it was in the first place and we will keep up at it till we find the cause.
as for servos going wacko it's interference and it's normal.
get the habit of turning radio on-heli on---fly then turn heli off -radio off this way you wont make the mistake of starting your heli with the radio off it's scarry don't ask how i know this

hope i got all the info you needed

Yes, you are right. I changed the glow plug and everything returned to normal. I guess it was full of dirt so it can't hold the glowing. By the way, is there any method to clean the glow plug to keep it working more time?.

I couldn't solve the problem with the tail rotor 'cause it was a rainy day and I had to leave the field . I will try next weekend.

Thank you very much about your offer of giving me your number but I'm in Spain (near Valencia, here in the mediteranean coast) and it will be a bit expensive. I have to save my money to buy glow plugs .

Best regards

hi vic

glad to hear it's doing better ,no you can't clean those glow plugs
once they go that's it but since you are running riche they clog up quicker when you have about 2 gallons of fuel burnt you will start to lean it and your plugs will last longer.i can go 12 gallons befor i change it but i do check it once in a while.

good plan save the cash for plugs and fuel
feel free to drop me a line anny time

fly well
