I have found that a simulator, specifically the RealFlight G2, was an incredibly good investment. This $180-$200 tool is worth its weight in helicopters. I won't reproduce my recent post in the "Lift Off!" section, but I just had my first, unassisted helicopter flight. On just my first tank of gas, I could hover literally in one spot with ease, hover at shoulder height, hover about as I pleased, and land, without incident. By the way, it was dark and I was flying under a parkinglot light. I had no prior helicopter experience before this. Just RealFlight. You have sooo much more confidence on your first flight, that you WILL be able to FLY it, not just "hop around a bit". Of course, this is just my opinion. Happy flying!!! Jesse

I agree. I had a similar experience in that I did the simulator exclusively for about 2 months before touching the real thing. I haven't had a crash yet and have been upwards of 200 ft for aerial photographs.

RFG2 I have spent alot of time on G2 this Winter approx 300 hours, and it greatly improved the confidence. Altough the physics differ from reality in some ways, it is a excellent way to learn all the orientation and develop proper reaction/instinct. FranK<

Re: Simulator - Best investment I have a real flight g2 simulator also which i spent $200.00 on and this simulator has taught me how to fly very well with lots of practice. I can fly circles around me backwards and forwards , I can also hover and land in different spots . I can also fly figure eights with ease with out crashing. The helicopter i am flying now is a Eflite blade dx double rotor head without a tail rotor. This thing flies awesome and its easy to fly around my living room. This has been a great experience for me. I highly recomend this flight simulator. p.s. practice and more practice makes for fun flying.

| Re: Simulator - Best investment I totally agree, a good sim is the best thing to get....I used two basic sims...they were for fixed wing stuff primarily...but the helis on them really bugged me....they were soooo hard to fly but so challenging that they were fun. The two sims were EasyFly and FMS....I figured that if I could master these helis then flying the real thing couldnt be so hard.....the fixed wing stuff helped my fixed wing learning curve no end. My first real heli, a Nexus 30, was being flown in gentle circuits after 5 minutes of hovering.....I found hovering easy...easier than the sims...I now have TruFlite 3D as my main simulator....its features are vastly superior to the previous sims mentioned...in that typical heli functions can be used....I imagine G3 and G2 etc are in the same league...in fact they are probably better than TruFlite. Some folk, scoff at the basic sims.....I know they are basic but they do help with orientation......of course its better to buy the best you can afford......they certainly shorten the learning curve and save many pounds too. | Re: Simulator - Best investment Depends on the PC performance in some cases....G3 is better...probably but if G2 is cheaper and good enough and is the 'right' price then folk will use it. realflight seems quite expensive...but you get 'transmitter' thing with it dont you? I would love realflight but my PC will not handle either version....its only 750 mhz which is a mere abacus compared to todays more current machines. Rob |
