Engine dies when I peg the throttle

I have an OS .32 SX-H in a Shuttle. When I am hovering, starting, taking off the engine runs perfectly. When I am hovering and push the heli to full throttle the engine slows WAAAAY down. Had a controlled crash cause of it. Then when I started the engine I just pegged the throttle while holding the head and the engine died on me. What do I do to fix this?

Thanks!

Hi

I can not be sure But it sounds as though your engine may be running lean, this means that not enough fuel is getting into it to lube it, This can cause very servier damadge to your engine. You need to open the main needle one and a half turns with the throttle closed then see how it runs from there. I have posted the pages that are concerned with you getting your engine set back to factory settings so that you can run it from here. I also have the os 32 sx engine.

You may need to copy the picture and then rotate it to read its properly.

I don't think I am running lean. When I pinch the fuel cable it takes about 8 seconds or so before I see the RPM's go up. Checked for that already

ok, Well it looks as though the only things you can do short of taking the advice that the booklet gives you, Is to change the glow plug and see if that has got anything to do with it. I take it there is plenty of smoke coming from the exhaust when your running it then?

Possible answers to your problem

For OS32 engines, you only set your main needle at 1 1/2 turns when you break in your engine. Break in will only take around 2 to 3 tanks and after this you can set your main needles to full power and enjoy your flight. I will assume that you have done the trouble of engine break-in and I will start procedure on how to set your engine to deliver maximum power.

1. Just after break in, change your glow plugs even if they still look good.
2. Set your main needle to 1.25 turns.
3. Start your engine and let it warm up for about 2 min. If your engine is difficult to start, then your idle screw is not set correctly. Refer to your engine manual to reset your idle screw to factory setting. You have to find the right setting of your idle screw in order for you to start your engine.
4. After the engine has warmed up, observe the idling RPM and the smoke coming out from the exhaust. There should be a lot of smoke this time. If idling is sluggish, close your idle screw until you get a perfect idling RPM.
5. Hover your heli and observe the pick up of the engine form idle to hovering power. This time you will not get enough power and if you are not lucky, your engine will quit. If this happens, close your needle to 1 turn. Remember it is initially 1.25 turns.
6. Start your engine and do exercise 3 - 5 until you can hover your heli without your engine quitting on air.
7. At this point, you will notice a lot of smoke coming out form your exhaust and transition form idle to hover is sluggish when you start pushing your throttle. If this is the case, land your heli and close your needle another 2 clicks.
8. Hover your heli and observe the smoke and the transition form idle to hover. There must be a lot of improvement now. Repeat excerse 7 & 8 until you get a smooth transition form idle to hover. Whenever you intend to close your main needle, you should see a stream of smoke coming out from the exhaust. If you don't see a stream of smoke form the exhaust while hovering, then you are too lean already. At any settings I have mentioned, you must be able to touch the back plate of your engine right after you land your heli. If you cannot touch the back plate for about 10 sec (comfortably) then your engine is too lean. If this happen, open the main needle 2 clicks.
9. After you have accomplished step 8 then your engine is set to mid range power. Next is to set your engine at full power. This time, a beginner cannot accomplish this task because we need to force your heli to deliver maximum power while tuning. If there are experience pilots in your area, ask for some help.
10. Setting your heli at full power. Fly your heli and do hard manuvers to force your engine to deliver its rated power. The best way to force your heli to deliver its full power is to do a continues flip for about 3 min. Then immediately land the heli and touch the back plate. Same thing you must be able to touch the back plate for about 5 sec (comfortably). If it’s too hot, then open your needle one click. If its cold and you still want power, close it 1 click at a time and repeat the procedure of forcing your heli to the max.
11. After accomplishing step 10, land your heli and check idling. If idling is RPM increases, then you need to open your idle screw till you get a steady idle RPM.

I hope this will help.
