| I know that WD-40 should not be used as an engine after-run product because there are hints it can attract moisture. [Edit 14-oct-2003: I must have got myself completely confused with the fact that it's the fuel that attracts moisture, not WD-40. Sorry I messed up. But there were cautions with using WD-40 - can't remember what they are, I'll have to do a search on the forums e.g., RunRyder) What about a product called GT85? Here are some details from the can: "The Lubricant, Penetrator and Water Displacer" "GT85 - with PTFE" "Contains PTFE - The PTFE forms a long lasting protective and lubricating film" "Directions for use: Spray on area to be treated. Solvent evaporates leaving a protective PTFE film. For best results do not wipe off" Last edited by darren_uk : 10-12-2003 at 08:36 PM. |

| after run oil Hi I dont want to leave you without an answer to this but I don't have one to give. I have never heard of this product, What I will say is unless you have a good reason for not wanting to use after run oil then use it, It is relatively cheap and available through most good model shops. It has been specially designed for the job it does. Though I have heard a lot of people I fly with say that you realy don't need to use after run oil if you run your engine regular, Some of the older pilots I fly with say that unless they intend to take the winter out from flying they don't bother with anything but a good clean and there engines run fine. | HI, I am speaking as a mechanic and not an heli expert. I am assuming this is an oil used for storing the engine...... Unless the engine is going to be left a long time without use, then no oil is required. If the engine is left for a few months, in a damp place then oil is a good idea. Any engine oil or light machine oil will do. Just squirt a little in the cylinder and turn over a few times. When you start using it again, just squirt some fuel in and do the same (flushes oil out). Its used to stop the rings from sticking and also the cylinder from rusting. If rust sets in and engine is turned over, with weak rings, the rings may crack. If the engine is seized then use a product like WD-40. Leave for a few hours, keep squirting it in. After a while it will free up. I HOPE THIS IS OF USE ![]() |

| wd40 Hi I have often heard people say that they use WD40 to protect there engines if they are going to be stored for months without use, So I was unsure about your original coment that mentions it attracting moisture. I have got a can in front of me now and it clearly says on the can that it drives out moisture!!! Surely they couldn't make a clame such as this without it having been proven? Oh well either way I have got an engine that is having a rest over the winter so I am going to use it in that. I will find out for sure. C U, Darren. ![]() |

| I have got a can in front of me now and it clearly says on the can that it drives out moisture!!! It is realy good at driving out moisture!!! damp ht leads etc. But it is not intended for long term use, more as a penatrating oil. I can't see any problem in using it though. |

| But it is not intended for long term use!!!! Oh I better go and tell that to all my car tools that have been protected buy it for years. This is oil and as long as you don't wipe it off after spraying it on. As it also says on the can, Then it will also protect for a very considerable amount of time. This of course is provided you keep what it is your protecting inside and not out in the rain!!!!!! I don't think there's much chance of us treating engines like that. Just to reiterate for those that might miss it, it also says it protects and for those that want to argue that it does not say Do not wipe off, read under flammable/Directions for use.![]() Last edited by Daz(DJLFlapper) : 10-10-2003 at 08:33 PM. |

Hay! lets all fill our cars with WD-40...lmao. u better leave it at that welsh dragon Last edited by dredge3 : 10-11-2003 at 05:04 PM. |
