| Mixture too Rich? Hello all: Newbie here. Just finished making all the adjustments and whatnot on my new Raptor 50 SE. I bought the OS 50 engine, instead of the Thunder Tiger 50. Took it to the the drive way this afternoon to see if it would even start and sure enough it did. :-) The adrenaline pumping and all. My question is how much fuel residue is considered normal? In the booklet that came with the engine, they suggested 1.5 turns away from closed.(Needle valve) It also stated that you should run it about yet another turn open during the break-in period, and for higher percentages of Nitro. I'm running 30% Nitro so I figured about 2-2.5 turns should do the trick. However, after running the engine up to just "float" the heli, it was leaving a light spray of fuel all over the driveway behind the exhaust. I would have never known this had it been in grass, etc. In addition to that, everything aft of the muffler was pretty much damp with fuel. Is that normal? I know it says in the manuals, etc. to wipe everything down after flying. But there was seriously almost a stream running down the left rear skid. Thanks for the insight and suggestions. |

| Re: Mixture too Rich? If you have a light spray coming out it perfectly normal, especially for break in. It's also normal that the whole left side of your model, and sometimes the whole thing, will be covered in fuel after you've been flying for the day. If your a neat freak, you won't like nitros. You could try to lean it out a little but if it's running, I wouldn't worry about it. I would get a gallon of fuel through it for break-in and then start fine tuning the engine.

| Re: Mixture too Rich? They get messy for sure, the surest way is to compare fuel usage....this will be higher during 'break in' .......are you using a muffler extension? mine is made from silicone rubber and keeps the exhaust residue well away from my chopper. oil residue should comfort you......no residue means problems with either fuel or carb settings. Heres a tip: have you sealed the muffler to the engine? that joint can leak like crazy.......which will drive you mad becuase the mess gets all over the place. Remove, clean both muffler joint surface and engine exhaust port surface.....clean really well....mix some 5 minute epoxy....smear on both jointing surfaces......join....tighten the bolts...just nip them up.....wait for a while then tighten....but dont overdo it.....hey presto!!!! a nice leak free joint which should leave your engine looking good.:-) Rob |

| Re: Mixture too Rich? I use 5 min epoxy on my muffler and for some reason it just doesn't last. I wiggled my muffler after flying yesterday and it was really loose. Explains the oil dripping all over the place. I tightened it up but may take it off and redo it. I may try to loc-tite the screws. I never bothered before because of all the fuel in the threads and you just can't get a clean surface in the threads.

| Re: Mixture too Rich? Its your choice, but you don't have to run 30% nitro. You'll be surprised that the 50 will run just fine on 15-20 and you save money. Don't forget your paper towels, welcome to nitro. |

| Re: Mixture too Rich? try this if you can? take a couple of lock nuts and put them on the muffler screws, you may have to find just the right way to put them on but they should not back off. i did this on my venture 30 and had no problems after. and just remembered my venture manual says to seal with a thin piece of alummenum(spelled wrong i know). warm it up then reset the screws |

| Hi Guys, I broke in the OS 50 Hyper yesterday.. I started with 3 turns open and the engine wouldn't run without glow attached. So I burned 2 tanks with the glow attached then leaned it to 2.5 turns. After that I started with 2 turns and hovered it. When I landed I saw this thick greenish cloud drifting from our yard to the neighbor's 3 houses down, the front yard is glissening with oil. Man does that engine haul! I have the blades at 10 deg + and 10 deg -. At the flying site I hovered then went full throttle... it excellerated to about 50 feet then bogged! I thought for sure I would have to do an auto but it was fine. Richened it up 2 to 3 clicks and only the space shuttle excellerates faster! I had an Evolution 52NX in it and for the life of me I couldn't get it to run. It ended with a blown rod. It is on warrantee and will soon be getting another. Jim |

| Re: Mixture too Rich? 3 turns out on your hyper! yikes lol, i run mine in with a tank or 2 on 1 and a half turns out (the standard setting) then tend to lean it off to about 1 full turn and 4 clicks out on the main needle, if u run it to rich it'll bog like a sod and fill your exaughst up with oil but generally speaking it depends wot muffler your using but i dont no any one that runs more than 1 and a half turns out, leave the slow running needle at factory. |
