Getting Off The Ground Hi guys like the site only realised u had a fourm the other day Any way back to my problem. (My first heli by the way) I reccently brought a Electric FEDA micro dragonfly (more info at www.eflite.com) and a JR X-378 radio system, Fitted the the heli with a GWS pg-02 gyro and 2 GWS micro servos and a micro 5ch reciever. All rdy to fly right so i charge the battery up, Set the radio up in acro mode adjusted the trims. (i had a general idea of what i was doing) First few tries i didnt try to get it off the ground i just wanted to see what would happen, A few tries later and i manage to get it to full stick it raised about 5cm held for a few seconds the returned to the ground hovering very lightly on its skids. I checked the battery after many charges and it was fully charged evey time. I weighed it the max weight is 300g they say my weight was 290-295 so i presume thats OK i checked throtle travel even tho its an electiric, But still i couldent figure it out. Any1 have any ideas its getting very boaring hovering on the ground (alltho in very good at keeping it in one place ![]()

Hi Kyle, How high do you stay above sea level? If everything is okay with the heli, air density plays a very important part the power that the rotors can give. Generally, the denser the air, the more power you can produce from the blades.... so those people at high altitude sometimes experience a lack of power although the engine is already screaming.

*VERY* good reply by Colin. Just to expound on that, the things that are going to produce lift include: - Speed the wing (each rotor blade is a wing effectively) goes through the air - The angle of attack that the wing is presented to the air at - Air Density as Colin has pointed out (living in the UK I always overlook that one!!) As long as the rotors are going around fast enough (batteries? No undue friction dragging down the speed?) And the blades are pitching up OK (they should be "sloping uphill" in the direction they travel anything up to 10degrees from the horizontal - less than 5 degrees will probably be an insufficient angle of attack)

Ya, my PPL examiner ask me which parts of the plane is affected by Air Density and I replied, "The Wings".. then he ask which other part? I was stumped. I forgot the propeller blades are also airfoils.

I also brought a FEDA before(second hand.), After I fly some time, it slow down and just stay at around 10cm or less. I heard that from the other web sites, the Motor used in FEDA is so less reliable, so after around 20 ~ 40 times flying, it will loss power!!!! so, I suggest you should change the motor. From other websites, they suggested to use 280BB or speed 300 motor. This also will happen in the tail motor too.. So also pay attension on the power of the tail motor! if anything wrong, just replace it, some suggested to use GWS B2C tail motor. Hope can help you.

Hi, Im new to helis, and was thinking of buying a Feda mini dragon fly (rtf), which i think is a rename of the Hummingbird. is this heli any good, and do the controls on the rtf model control the heli like most rc helis?i.e does the right stick control the cuclic control, and the left stick controls the lift and tail rotor. also does the rtf model come with a gyro or not? thanx ![]()

Ive seen what they call the humming bird its a little differnt to the standard feda and i think there avalible in America. I would say dont bother ifu really want to get into helis save ur money and buy a big 1 i have just brought a raptor 30 v2 ARF and looking foward to flying it. But good luck anyways keep asking around about the feda. |

Was the motors slowing down your only problem? I've heard a lot about this and i'm prepared to buy a new motor for it if this is the only problem. Thanks.
