hover hight?

first i would like to say if this is the wrong place then sorry

second i would like to say i have only been flying since last month (Christmas) and LOVE IT

ok i have just been wondering what hight should i be hovering at? I normally hover at about a foot but i am having trouble keeping it still. now i know that it won't just sit in the air perfectly but i always end up having it fly around as far as 5 feet in any direction. I have noticed that when i would bring it up higher (highest being about eye level [and i am 6 feet tall]) it is more stable and i can hold it in a 2 foot area a little bit longer then at 1 foot but i scares the heck out of me because i am afraid that i might mess up and have to pay a huge repair bill, or medical bill, or fly it over my fence and have to pay a repair bill, a broken window, and possibly a vet bill because of their dog which makes yapping at our fence a past time sport .

So what i would like to know is should i just try to hover it with in a 1 foot area or so at one foot until i can keep it in a small area. If so, then when should i go higher and to what hight? or should i bring it up to like 2 or 3 feet (or higher [ if i do that then i would bring it to the park to be safe]) to try to get out of the rotor wash?

oh and i fly a Helimax AXE CP if that helps.

Note: that is my heli in the picture in my signature from my recent crash. But it wasn't my fault, it was the grasses because it jumped out at it and ate it

And for a sim. I don't think that i will be getting one (even though i want one) but my mother is on edge already of how much my heli has cost me so far. All i need is to buy a 150 dollar sim and have my mother think that i will be wasting all of my life and money on a toy ( that is how my mom thinks of it. i know better though, after seeing how my heli can make a trench in the dirt and grass makes me have the utmost respect for it). I know that there are free sims out there but i worry that they are not realistic enough. Even so, I will still see if i can get one for my birthday most likely real flight G 3.5 or G4 (even though i was thinking of trying for a trex se but i need to know how to fly before i upgrade to more expensive repair bills) but my birthday is about 9 months away...

I cant reccomend a good simulator enough....it will save time and money and you get to progress much faster then you would think...

I used FMS which was a great sim for a freebie...but honestly? I would get realflight or Reflex xtr...these are 'real' sims.

Hovering?

Just off the ground you get 'ground effect' which means the downwash provides a 'cushion' so firstly you dont need so much power...but the heli will wobble around...about 2 to 3 ft you need more power...but the heli is out of this effect..so should be more stable.

Re: hover hight?

yea, i know. I think that once i get the money i think i will just bite the bullet and get real flight G3.5 because it has my heli in it . It will be awhile though, because wallet has been drained from crashes . i have spent about $120 (a lot of it was buying duplicate parts because i knew i would use them.) on repairs as it is. And that is a big impact on a person who doesn't have a full time job yet (i only help setup for shows every once in awhile). but anyways i will save up for one since i have almost had to pay that much in repair bills anyways. But i can see my mother thinking or saying "why in the world would you pay $150 dollars for a video game?" but i guess i will just have to explain to her that it isn't a video game. And that it will save me in the long run.

Re: hover hight?

I am also spending a lot on replacement parts.I like your idea of buying 2 or 3 of the parts at a time. Some times the shipping is more than the price of the parts. I live on the far east side of Mesa. A guy at the R/C air park out on Meridian & Brown Rd. has offered to help learn to fly my helicopter. I'm about to spend more on repair parts than the heli cost. Re: hover hight?

i have a question about real flight G3.5 . how real is it? i have read reviews saying that it has some issues and some of the aspects aren't realistic. so can anybody who has real flight G3.5 tell me how it is because i will not buy it if it is unrealistic.

thx

Re: hover hight?

I've had g3.5 for just over a week now and I think it's great, one of the good features is the virtual flight instructor, where you have an instructor talk you through different maneuvors with a picture in pictyre view of his transmitter so that you can see his stick input, they have a free demo on thier website.
