Unhappy Ker Smash!

Well, after about 3 batteries worth of throttling up enough to see how things balance (not well IMO), and dragging around the patio, I made another lift-off today, it headed for a plant, I shot it down, and balled it up on the grass. Now I have 2 tail-booms

So far I haven't had a successful clean liftoff without a pretty quick drift to the right. I've played with trim, but it just wants to go that way. Maybe that gets better out of ground effect, but I'm not there yet.J
Jeff

PS- This is a CP Pro. Can I get the tail boom loose from the main frame? Super Glue's parts can't be easy to break apart.

Re: Ker Smash!

Points worth considering:

Are the blades balanced? worth checking that out.

Are the paddles aligned with the paddle arm assys? you can squint along the rear edge of each paddle and line it up with the paddle arm assy...the paddles need to be 'nuetral' ie not lifting up or down...if they are slightly out the heli will still fly ok...but aim for accuracy.

How responsive is the heli? try moving the control arms a hole or so in...the further the control rods are from their respective servo arm centers....the more responsive the heli will be.

Do you have a training undercarriage device fitted? this will extend the helis landing base...helping it not tip over.

Helis are easier out of ground affect...they settle down much better.

Not sure about the drifting problem....the tail rotor will influence the heli....it will push the heli to one side...the gyro will hold the heli straight...but wont cancel the drift as such.

Dont get put off, its a good hobby...stick with the heli because parts are cheap usually...and if you can handle this heli then the larger ones wont be so hard to fly....thats if you want a larger heli.

I just got myself a Trex 450 XL...real gem of a heli.

Are the paddles aligned with the paddle arm assys? At the time of the "incident" I had just aligned the paddles. One had gotten several degrees out. you can squint along the rear edge of each paddle and line it up with the paddle arm assy...the paddles need to be 'nuetral' ie not lifting up or down...if they are slightly out the heli will still fly ok...but aim for accuracy.

How responsive is the heli? More than I think I would like at this timeTry moving the control arms a hole or so in...the further the control rods are from their respective servo arm centers....the more responsive the heli will be. Rodger.. I'll do this as soon as I get a new boom.

Do you have a training undercarriage device fitted? ABSOLUTLY! this will extend the helis landing base...helping it not tip over.

Helis are easier out of ground affect...they settle down much better. Just like the big ones.. All I need to do is get it there without it drifting 100' away.

Not sure about the drifting problem....the tail rotor will influence the heli....it will push the heli to one side...the gyro will hold the heli straight...but wont cancel the drift as such. I'm a little confused on this one as well. It's not rotating, so I'm not looking at a tail rotor problem. It's like I have right cyclic trimmed in, which may be. If I can get it out of ground effect that question can get answered.

Thanks! I'm a long way from giving up. I just need to develop the "touch" that I clearly don't have yet. I have about 20hrs in a 206/B3, and at this point, it's way easier to fly this thing. Thank god I don't fly it like I do this one

I just got myself a Trex 450 XL...real gem of a heli. Almost did that, but I wanted something a little cheaper to bust up the 1st time out.

Related question: Is it easier to just replace the entire frame and tail boom than try and break loose the two?

Re: Ker Smash!

You should compare the prices of the parts you are replacing next time you are at the store.
the T-rex parts come in multiple numbers per pack and are less then the efllite stuff.
I had a cp pro and they are very hard to learn on. very twitchy and uncontollable below 3ft of hovering.
You can tame it a little but it will still not be happy. Just my .02
Sell it and get a t-rex, you'll be happier.. I know I am.

Re: Ker Smash!

With the 3-4x initial cost, I can break an awful lot of parts before I would come even close to breaking even. No question this is a bear to fly, but I've had experienced guys fly this and it runs great. By the time I master this one I' sure I can deal with anything.

Re: Ker Smash!

i have the same problem with my walkera 60# it drifts to the left i think my problem is the main gear when i look at it the left side is lower than the right i think it might be the airframe being twisted or something

hope this helps
