First flight...first crash...I'm HOOKED!

Brand new to the site and to R/C Helicopters.
My wife got me a Walkera 22E for Valentine's Day. She gave it to me on Sunday because I had to work tonight. After charging the battery, attaching the training gear and glancing through the manual we took her out for a trial flight. I throttled it up and tried to hover. The wind was gusty and she kept drifting around. After a couple of shaky hovers I tried to get fancy and crashed it into a pole. I Unfolded the rotor blades tried again. After a couple of more tries the battery was spent.
***Fast-forward to newly charged battery: second try. Doing much better low hover (still with trainer) started to rotate tail boom. Suddenly drifted into my daughter's car and bam! Broke pieces in the collective(?) and both blade holders.

I ordered the new pieces and now sit and wait for parts to come.

My wife watched the second try at flight from inside. She said the look on my face was priceless as I struggled to succeed at my new found love.
This forum is great and I'm sure it will help me to reassemble and adjust my new bird.

Nice story! We've all been there and its well worth it when you learn control of your bird. If you have enough room, Id suggest practicing inside so you dont have to deal with wind. Even outside with a little wind, it will affect your heli in a pretty big way. ie: unpredictible & changing wind speeds, sudden gusts, ect...

Welcome to the site! Check out this link to Radd's School of Rotary Flight http://www.dream-models.com/eco/flying-index.html He breaks it down to 10 simple lessons that you can do in your garage, basement or kitchen. This will give you some direction on how to fly these crazy things without just firing her up and crashing.

Great site. I'm in need of all the instruction I can get. My Pop has a 40' x 24' pole barn with a 16' ceiling and smooth concrete floor. We spoke last night about flying in there. He was a helicopter mechanic while in the Army and has some stick time on the real thing. He's amazed by the mechanical detail in the model version.

Thunderbolt,

Hello and welcome to the site, Don't be put off from asking for advice or information even if you think it is silly you would be suprised at some of the questions people ask. All the same they get answers, As to the complexity of model helis they have come along a long way over the years and do carry a lot of similarities to the real helos.

Anyway, Welcome again hope you enjoy the site.
