First hover ; ))))))

Hi

Today I took my first stumbeling stepps into the sky with an old KKK Hughe 300.
I have never flown a Rc heli before except from a simulator. I have modified the Heli with a gyro and an extra servo for the throttle.
First I took some small jumps on the ground with the heli while trimming it. When I hovered it for a longer time I noticed that the engine rpm was decreasing when I reached the maximum. What should I do to fix this. Should I decreas the maximum pitch or should I try to adjuste the engine further?

Hope someone an helt me.

One happy flyer / Anders Molin

Smile Well done

Hi Anders,
First congrats on the maiden flight,
I hope you enjoyed yours as much as I enjoyed my first flight.
I am a little puzzled as to your thread you say you reached maximum and your engine was decreasing in rpm?
Were you at hover and trying to gain hight?
Did you use a pitch gauge to set the pitch, if so, what is the pitch set at for low, centre and high?
Also have you got any experience setting engines up?
At the moment it could be either you pitch is to high. Or you may need to play with the settings on your engine.

Are your throttle and pitch controls mixed or seperate.

I know it is a lot of questions but this will help people in the answers they can give.
Regards,
Daz.

Hey DAZ, you've ask the person if his pitch and throttle are separate. Would it be possible this way? Because I'm doing it on my first RC heli. I control the throttle in a rotary nob(channel 6), well, the real heli worked like this, separate throttle and pitch lever.

But my problem is, the engine got dead if I reduce my cylic from hover. Is this too rich or too lean setting?

Thanks

my thinking on this is, this may give you more probs than you need.
say you set throtle at 50% when colective is down to 0 deg
youre head speed will be way to high when you reach half way
say 6 degree you will hover ok but if you go beyon this you're engine will bog down cause you will have to much load on it,
you will constantly have to play with the throtle nob and pitch.
since you only have two hands the right one is to busy on cyclic
the left with altitude and tail rotor, this is why throtle and pitch are mixt toggeter on the throtle stick....
a better way to go if youre radio will not do this(airplane radio )
i have seen a few guys do o.k this way is to;
use a ---Y--- connecter on the throtle channel and plug in the pitch servo------now you will be limited as to what you can get as a pitch curve but a lease you will have one to play with
this way when you raise throtle the angle of attack on the blades will increase as well.
if you do this make sure you set up at 50% throtle you have 6 degree of pitch 0 deg would be best to start but as close to this as you can get;;;;ful stick 9 deg is good,,you can adjust push rod to achieve this ,just make sure you have hovering pitch 6 deg at 50% throtle and you will be o.k.

i think this would be much easier on you and safer
hope this helps

oops
thinking faster than i wright
when talking about 50% 6 deg---the 0 deg is for low stick and 9 deg for full stick

sorry

Hi guys, I always set my throttle to 50% when I start to hover so that there's enough power to lift, I have no problem on lifting. I do set my throttle around 75-80% approximately if ever I want to increase the pitch, and still, no problem on this. But my problem is, got dead stick if ever I reduce the pitch to land it from hover, And it seems the engine got drown with fuel. Is this normal? Or my engine is really pain in the a$$. I've got MDS 48-H, and a Nexus 46 heli.

Thanks yelloowtang,

Cheers,
Albert

don't know this engine but it shouln't do this
when you drop pitch to land do you drop throtle as well
if not your head speed probably rises quite some bit,if it does than are you loosing power before it dies?
it might be heating up cause of high rpm ,or does it sputter with tons of smoke
this would mean it's to rich at low speed.

lots of diiferent poss on this: glow plug, fuel, cloged fuel filter, needle mixture, head speed wich relates to the trying to controle both seperatly.try to realy pay attention to what 's hapening it will help to find the prob.

with practice you can probb work this set up but if all fails try my trick you got nothing to loose and it will be much easier to adjust
constant load on engine and less load when rpm's drop

good luck and let me know how it reacts i'm sure we can work this prob
