first flight and sim use

My elec heli should be in today, and I don't expect to fly it right away.

There are two well-known sims out there, FMS and Real Flight G3. I realize G3 is extremely realistic and the graphics are pretty good too. I was just curious, just how good is FMS? Is it good enough to gain a basic understanding of heli flight? I've flown R/C airplanes since I was 12 and am quite good (low altidude vertical hovers, 3d aerobatics, etc). I don't want to get cocky because of my PLANE skills and crash my helicopter. I'm starting off fresh, pretending like I don't know anything about flight.

I have never tried these sims and was just curious how realistic the heli. flight was.

One good thing is I'm very comfortable w/ nose-in flight, and don't get confused and mix-up control direction. If there's one skill I can transfer from flying planes, that's probably it.

Thanks for any input!

Re: first flight and sim use

I use Reflex XTR which seems to be more used in Europe. Dont know how it compares to Real Flight G3 but I like it and Ive heard from some people that it is better at simulating Helis. Also, you should be able to use the same Tx as your heli which also helps when you transition to the Real thing. Take a look at http://www.reflex-sim.de/ if you havent already seen it.

Re: first flight and sim use

FMS is not very real !!! I have used it and now use Real Flight G-2 .
Real Flight G-2 is much better but still I had to do a lot of setting changes to helicopter in G-2,,, to make it closer to real thing... With default setting on all helicopter's in G-2 it's not even close to the real thing!!! Fms is only good for teaching you what stick does what!!! And that's it... One of the setting in real flight that need changing is ( time multiplier ) you need to speed it up from 100 to 150 * that will make reaction time feel more real to flying RC helicopter's. Also go into ( weather ) to change wind setting from none to say 5 mph. wind and change direction of wind to + or - 10 * then change gust setting bar from smooth to one click to the right...
