Re: OS 50 engine

Hi Gorge
To break in your new engine start off by running the first tank through at an idle. Make sure you are running it as rich as possible to give it extra lubrication and keep the engine cool wile its sitting there on the ground idling. Kill the before you run the tank out completely to prevent a lean condition. Rotate the engine so that the piston is at the bottom of its stroke and let it cool down. For the next three or four tanks just hover the heli with the engine still running rich. Be sure to move the piston to the bottom of the sleeve after each tank to cool off during the break in. Now you can lean out the engine just a bit and do a little casual flying for a couple of tanks. After that you can start tuning the engine to your liking. Keep a close eye on the engine temps.

Re: OS 50 engine

Before ever starting it just pull the glow plug so that you can rotate the engine by hand using just the starter shaft. Using something that you can stick in the glow hole on to the piston you will be able to find BDC (Bottom Dead Center) of the stroke. You want to use something that cant damage the piston or threads. I use an old antenna tube. But only if the engine is completely cold so that I don't melt any plastic on to the piston. Once your certain you've found BDC find the place wear you can get a good view of the engine and clutch bell. There should be a bit of the drive hub visible beneath the clutch bell. With a permanent marker make a reference mark on the drive hub. Every time the engine is rotated around to BDC that mark will be in that spot.

Re: OS 50 engine

Its not a bad idea to rotate the engine by hand before starting the engine anyway. Sometimes with fuel lines and carbs and so on its not uncommon to get fuel in the crankcase and cylinder bore...when you go to start you run the risk of bending something within the engine.
