New to the heli scene..

Hi, I am very new to the RC heli scene and would like to know a few things!

First, I am looking for a heli that can be flown outside, can handle the cold up here, and can handle a bit of wind.

I was looking at a Blade 400 *I think its called* or a Trex 450.

I was also told that it is better to get one and assemble it yourself, which I'm assuming is true? because it helps you learn the ins and outs of the heli.

What do you think of the helis above? What other ones should I look at?

Thank You in advance!

Jake

Re: New to the heli scene..

It looks like your in basically the same situation as I am. I am looking at the same heli's. I live in ND so I have relitavely the same needs. Let me know what your getting. I think i'm going with a Trexx. Would be cool to get one at about the same time as someone else so we could learn together.

Have you ever flown a helicopter at all?

Re: New to the heli scene..

I'm at work so I'm not able to really look at certain websites that promote "buying". But when I get home I will show you what I'm thinking of.

So your talking about flying those little helicopters that only really have up down foreward and backwards?

I used to play with those too. They arent really anything like "real" RC helicopters. I flew my uncles and it is a whole lot different.

Hazen huh? Got there? If so maybe we could meet up there sometime and fly around together.

Edit: I've been up for ~ 20 hours now, so I'm gonna go sleep. Catch you guys tomorrow!

Re: New to the heli scene..

You should honestly start with an indoor heli like the Blade CX2 or Esky Lama. Upgrade to the B400 or Trex later. Yeh, some people can buy a 400 size heli and learn real fast. The rest of us can't. Helis are the most complicated RC product to use. Start small and grow is the best way.

A lot of hobby stores have flight sims running that the public can play with. Try it. If you can't take off, hover, land without crashing after a few tries, then you won't be able to do it with real heli either.

I researched for 2 months before I bought my CX2. I almost bought a few other helis and knowing what I know now, I'm glad I didn't.

Re: New to the heli scene..

I would, but I have literally no space indoors to fly, and my mom/her boyfriend would freak the **** out if I did, so yeah..Its either get an outdoors one, or not one at all.

Re: New to the heli scene..

Go with a Blade 400 then. RTF. Trex's are better, but also much more $$. $800+. Big learning curve on setup too.
The coaxials will fly outdoors, with no wind (no breeze of any kind).
Get a flight sim to start practicing with. Extremely worth it. You can get FMS for $40 or less with the controller. Check ebay for FMS.
Also, subscribe to other heli forums. Helifreak (my fav) Runryder, RCgroups are some of the better ones.
