what are the normal stick assignments

I just got interested in flying and bought a simulator, FMS but it kept crashing on the computer so I downloaded heli-sim.
All is working now but the question is what stick controls the throttle and rudder, etc.
I grabbed the sim transmitter and started usilng the sticks in the default mode and things seem backward to me. I have the option of mapping the controls for various functions, but thought, what is normal or better yet, are there prefered assignments, and why.
Thanks for any info.
I am not ready for anything fancy, so my wife bought me a esky fixed pitch Honey Bee. I have looked at RADDS rotary flight school and plan to use that method. I know this will not prevent costly crashes, but hopefully I wont kill the helicopter on the first flight.
Sorry this is so long, but if you need info, you go to the well.

Re: what are the normal stick assignments

Hi Pops,

Welcome

Normal stick config for the UK, US, and most of europe is as follows...

Left stick... Vertical.... Throttle + Pitch (Z axis movement)
Horizontal . Rudder (Yaw axis)

Right stick . Vertical ... Elevator (Pitch axis)
Horizontal . Aileron (Roll axis)

These are the stick assignments that most people fly, they sort of duplicate what would be found on a real helicopter. The reason you would want to keep to that is that if you learn to fly on any other stick configuration 2 things happen. 1st, you cannot fly anybody elses heli. 2nd, nobody can fly yours nor can they give you instruction.

Good luck with it... Azzy

Re: what are the normal stick assignments

Thanks that makes sense, then is it correct to raise the throttle to increase, it was set up so that when I lowered the throttle, the heli would rise.
And when I move the rudder to the left, should the tail move to the left or would I be making a left turn therfore the nose would be going left, and the tail to the right.

Re: what are the normal stick assignments

Yes,

Increasing the throttle causes the heli to rise.
When you are learning it does seem a bit counter intuitive but when you input left rudder the NOSE of the heli goes left and the tail goes right.

The reason for this becomes obvious when you progress to forward flight because if the sticks are configured to left stick left tail, when the heli is moving the steering is reversed lol.

Take care... Azzy

Re: what are the normal stick assignments

Thanks, that really clears things a lot. I have been practicing with the sim and if I crashed the real heli as much as the sim, I probably could have bought the real thing, full size.

thanks I wll be watching this board and hoping to learn as much as I can

Re: what are the normal stick assignments

No problem

Sims are good. They are probably the only thing in this hobby that actually save you money lol.

Feel free to post up and ask things anytime. Though you might not get an instant response, somebody will usually try to help.

Take care.. Azzy
