Gyro Problem?

Newbie question. I have a King Bee 2 that I have upgraded to a brushless motor (ESky 3800) and Align 35amp Esc w/gov mod. Even before I upgraded I had a problem with excessive tailspin. Even moving the controller as far to the left a the servo would travel would not stop the heli from spinning. I suspect that it is the gyro but my lack of experience and knowledge does not allow me to diagnose the problem any further.

I upgraded because the speed controller and or the stock brushed motro stopped operating.

Any ideas? Am I headded in the right direction?

Re: Gyro Problem?

rudder maxed out. Throttle trim down. I have tried seeting the trim to either side as well asusing the normal/reversed switch on the gyro. I even went as far as to move the connection point on the servo arom to the furtherest (if that i s a word) point to try to compensate for the spin. Nothing is working and I must admint I am a bit frustrated. guess I should have started with a 4 channel like I bought for my son.

Re: Gyro Problem?

Hi Razor,

Might be that the gyro gain is too low. Unfortunately, I dont know the HB kings gyro but I can give you some stuff to check. Im assuming that its a head hold gyro here. The checks here might seem a little complicated but if you shout back and tell us what happens, then we should be able to help out.

1. When you switch everything on, and then move the rudder stick, does the rudder servo move?. If no then it could be that a connection is loose at the rx or the gyro.

If the servo moves then you need to start checking the gyro.

2. To check normal mode. Switch on your tx then switch on the heli. Wait for the gyro to initialise, this is normally indicated by an LED on the gyro comming on. Okay now take a hold of the tail and give it a quick jerk to one side... Does the tail pitch lever or the rudder servo move in response?

It its no, then the gyro might be broken or perhaps the gyro gain is too low, I dont know how you adjust gain on the Honey Bee but Im sure the manual will tell you. For a start out set the gain to 50%. If you know the gain is set right then and the tail pitch still doesnt move when "wiggled" then its the gyro thats at fault.

3. To check head hold.. Turn everything on and flip your head hold switch. Now add a small amount of rudder and hold it. If head hold is working properly, the tail servo will slowly "creep" until the servo reaches the end of its travel. If it doesnt, then head hold isnt set up right.

4. To check the gyro sense.. Power up and jerk the tail of the heli in one direction and observe the direction that the TRAILING edge of the tail blades moves. Im doing this from memory so I might be wrong... It should move in the same direction as you pushed the tail. If it moves the other way, you need to reverse the gyro sense at the gyro NOT at the transmitter... DO NOT use the servo reverser on the transmitter to change gyro sense... It doesnt work.

5. To check rudder control sense.. Power up and apply rudder in one direction... Looking towards the nose from the tail, the TRAILING edge of the blades should move in the direction you moved the stick. If it goes the other way to need to reverse the sense at the transmitter. IE use the servo reverser on the TX.

Unfortunately, gyros are about the trickiest things on the heli to check and above is what Id do to check it. If the above doesnt help post back and I'll try to find a setup guide for you.

Good luck... Azzy.

Re: Gyro Problem?

The problem is there may not be enough positive angle to the tail rotor blades. The way to correct this is at the tail rotor servo, what need's to be done is make a mark at the rear of the servo mount on the tail boom by wrapping tape around it so you know the original location. Then you loosen the mounting screws and slide it forward just alittle and retighten it, try it and see if it's better if it is then you have it. I this didn't do it move it alittle more until the tail stay's put with the trim set at zero. I had to move mine a quarter of an inch forward to gain the perfect setting. These heli's and most other's are supposedly test flown and checked before being packed but all that is really done is they bench test them for function. Once you get your tail dialed in your trim will be more accurate and effective.

Re: Gyro Problem?

My Belt-CP has the same stock gyro as the HBKII. There is a fwd/rev switch on the gyro. If the transmitter rudder switch is set for rev, the gyro switch must be set to rev as well.

Re: Gyro Problem?

I have just this to add as it sounds to me that the gyro needs reversing but CHECK EVERYTHING! I have seen these things with the entire tail assembly built backwards so take nothing for granted.
Good luck with your new Heli!
