Already broke the blade & other issues..

So my Christmas present arrived today, my Lama V4 showed up WOOT!!! Well anyways, I talked my wife into letting me "test fly" it to make sure it all works. I charged the battery and I flew the FSM that came with it until it was charged.

After I skim through the manual and such which is a HORRIBLY TRANSLATED Japanese manual. I plug the battery in (at this point the controller is NOT turned on) and my copter goes nuts.. the blades turn and stop on their own, i thought it was possessed. So I disconnected the battery, turned on the controller and plugged the battery back in, problem solved. I am guessing my wifi network or cell phone is sending some sort of signal. I fly it around my house.. well basically I take off and land and take off and land that's about all I can do. I guess on one of my ventures I hit the wall or a pepsi box or something and it put a small crack in one of my prop blades It wasn't very big so I didn't change it out yet.

Well my dog HATES it, he is so scared, so I took it outside. It is cold out but NO wind at all today. I flew the thing up to about 60 feet until I almost couldn't see it (as it's very dark outside) and then slowly brought it back down, no problems. I am decent with the up and down motions, its the steering and turning that gets me.

Does anyone know if you can change the way the controller is set up or is this basically how all american copter controllers are set up.

My left stick up and down makes it lift and lower, left and right makes it spin around left and right.

My right stick up and down makes it go forward and back, left and right makes it lean left and right.

I would like it if my left stick is up and down and lean left and right, and my right stick is front and back, and turn around left and right. Is this changeable? Also on my controller for the lama v4 there is a metal toggle switch at the upper top right part of the controller that I have no clue what it is for. Can anyone tell me what it does?

Next I noticed I could not get it trimmed so that it hovered flat. It always would move forward or backward or side to side or spin on it's own. The closest I could get it I had the right stick up and down all the way up and the left stick side to side one all the way to the right. I am not sure what to do.

I don't actually get it till Christmas, it's been reboxed but any suggestions? I will continue to fly the sim until then (and after as well). I noticed though that the blade was nearly completely broken off so I will have to change that out, thank god it came with 2 extra blades! I am going to be ordering me some replacement parts this week to have on standby.

Thanks,

David

Hi there,

Sounds like your doing good there.

Youve learned your first important lesson there... NEVER switch on a heli without its transmitter being on first... and NEVER switch off a transmitter on a live heli. Its not a huge problem for a small machine like a lama but switching off on a live trex 600 or even 450 could result in horrible consequences.

The transmitter youve got is set to the same setup as most people in Europe, the US and Australia (I think). You could change it by re-plugging the servos but I wouldnt because if you learn to fly like that, A. You'll never be able to fly anybody elses helicopter. And B. Nobody wil be able to help fly yours.

As far as trimming goes and getting them to hover flat.. The quick answer to this is .. They dont , by its nature there is always going to be some randomly changing outside influence affecting the model.. Even indoors, the turbulence from their own rotor system can affect them. And although it is possible to trim them to hover hands off (for a while), you need a rather large indoor space (sports hall) so that they dont affect themselves. You'll be unlikely to get it to behave like that in a house. The spin that you are referring to is a known problem with all the contra rotating helis. You have to work the tail to keep them straight.. its because the 2 motors respond to the drop in battery voltage in slightly different ways. Its unfortunately unavoidable and you'll find it will spin one way for about half the battery then the other way for the rest.

Hope this helps... Azzy

PS.. I would change that cracked blade out ASAP, you dont want to take the risk of it letting go in flight on christmas morning.

I have only been in the hobby a couple of months and love it. I have known to follow the above procedure but why is it that the motors can turn on, on their on, what's happening?

Re: Already broke the blade & other issues..

Yeah I pretty much learned that lesson... It doesn't tell you that in the manual, and if it does, I sure as hell can't read it!! But I plugged in the battery and the blade smacked me in the mouth!! It really hurt thank god it was such a small plane!

I was looking online and I found some motor upgrades and some aluminum parts, are these worth purchasing?

PS ill post picture of my blade i broke after christmas when i get the copter back lol.

I will say this.. it was NOT as easy as I thought it would be to fly GO GO FLIGHT SIMULATOR!
