Larger fixed pitch heli.??

I'm new to helicopters but not new to electric R/C. I'm looking for a fixed pitch heli but not a small one and definately not a coaxial. Idealy I would like to find one that can use a standard receiver/servos/gyro, quality brushless motor, and pretty big lipo batteries (1800-2200 mAh), not to mention spare parts that are available in the US. What I don't want is a piece of junk collective pitch heli that is broken before it even arrives. Am I asking too much or is there such a product out there.? Seems like there should be a decent 4 channel electric heli around 24" rotor diameter somewhere. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Larger fixed pitch heli.??

Hi Steve

Welcome to the forum.

Can I ask why you would want a large fixed pitch heli? I believe you can get them but they arent really good quality machines and spares will be extremely difficult to get.

I think I understand why you dont want to buy a "junk" collective machine but what about a not junk collective machine or even a kit, which ensures that its not broken before it arrives.

Take care... Azzy

Re: Larger fixed pitch heli.??

Hi Azzy, Thanks for your reply. Here's my reasoning.

I already have several 3 cell lipos, balance charger, tx, rx, servos, etc from my planes. I purchased a Junkera 36b and it fell apart from day 1. With the collective pitch system it seems like there's just too many linkages/parts to go break or get out of adjustment, not to mention electronics that burned up once a week. With a fixed pitch system it seems like a quality swash plate and 4 links would be bullet proof. Also, bigger means slower/less twitchy. Think of a 32" trainer plane vs my last nitro plane, a 102 inch "floater".

Let me know if you run accross any of this type of heli.

Re: Larger fixed pitch heli.??

Hi dood.

Okay I can understand wanting to keep the lipos and radio gear. If your servos and RX are "mini" then a T-Rex 450 XL would probably be a good choice for you. Otherwise to use full sized servos and RX you'd need a 30 sized machine (600mm Blades) and 6 cell lipos.

You are right about junkera lol. They fall into 2 catergories, ones that fly and ones that dont, Most are in the latter and it sounds like you were in this category as well.

Bigger does mean less twitchy, however, I doubt that bigger fixed pitch would be any easier to manage outside than a small machine.

I may be teaching my grandmother to S**k Eggs here but the problem with Fixed pitch is that the machines lift is controlled solely by the speed of its blades... When a gust of wind hits the heli, aerodynamic principles insist that the blades get more efficent (they are moving) this therefore means more lift and the heli climbs... To maintain a hover, you react by reducing the throttle which slows the blades, unfortunately, the blades have inertia and they take time to slow enough to reduce lift and usually by the time they have, the gust of wind has passed and the heli is now falling much faster than expected and you have to jack up the throttle to compensate... unfortunately, they take time to get up to speed. Conversley CP helis can maintain a constant rotor speed and vary the lift by changing the angle of attack on the blades... Much, much quicker to respond.

I understand youve had your fingers burned a bit with the pookera but you might want to look at the Trex 450XL, It wont cost you a fortune (provided youve got a 5 channel radio) and you wont be dissapointed by the quality.

Take care... Azzy
