OS 61 SF start probs

Newbee can't get OS 61 SF engine sterted on GMP (hirobo) Unsure how many years engine has been sitting but it appears in excellent shape and can hardly get it to crank unless I take out glow and then I can do so by hand. I am still not sure which direction to turn it (the cooling fins (head is pointing aft toward tail which is how most that I have observed), nor am I sure of the throttle operation. The conventional rubber tipped grip starter does not even attempt to start it so I have a slotted homemade affair that someone sold me on e-bay and it just slips on the shaft even with 3 set screws torqued to the max. Like I said, this engine looks so good that I cannot believe there is something wrong with it (it's probably my lack of knowledge) so I'm trying to get a hex start arrangement set up to use instead of taking the thing out of the helo and tearing into it. Any one out there with any advice for me (other than to give up)?
