new to helis and have questions

Hello everyone! I've recently taken an interest in the RC heli world and I'm hoping I'll be able to make it a hobby. My only concern is I have no idea how to fly a RC heli. For this reason, I wanted to start out small and somewhat cheap so I can learn the basics. I was thinking about getting one of the Air Hogs Reflex helis, but I've read several posts from owners that said they would spin uncontrollably after a few flights and adjusting the trim didn't help. The other one I was looking at and really like is the Esky Coco Lama V4 Revolution. I figured once I got the hang of it and I was very comfortable with it, I could move up to something bigger like the Esky Honey Bee King 2. What are your thoughts on this?

Re: new to helis and have questions

The Blade CX2 might be the one for you....its cheap, popular and will give you a good grounding as to how the controls on the radio operate. Its really an indoor heli....something like a gym would be the best place to fly it. I own a similar heli to the CX2 and its been great...really good value for money.

I would invest in an RC simulator too....its best to hunt about and find a deal...which includes both heli/radio/charger etc AND a simulator....that way you can get busy on the sim....and then try to fly the real thing....if you break the real one....you can get some parts for it...and do some sim time while waiting for the parts to arrive!!!

Basically the more channels the heli has, the better it will be....the basic two channel type helis are fun...but limited in control.

The Blade CX2 seems to be very similar to the coaxial Lama V4 except for the price. The Blade CX2 goes for $189, while the Lama V4 is $89. It seems odd that I can get a Honey Bee King 2 for nearly $20 less than the cost of this "beginner" heli.

Re: new to helis and have questions

Hi Axel.

The lama and the blade cx2 are very similar, however, I think that the CX2 has a 2.4Ghz Transmitter which will no doubt account for some of the cost difference. Also this hobby is one of those which demonstrates very well the old addage "you gets whats you pays for" and if something seems very cheap and a great bargain then its probably missing something that others put in.

I cant comment about the king2 being cheaper than the blade CX the question is, have you confirmed the place offering it that cheap has got it?

For your progression, the king2 or better still the T-rex 450 would be a good next step once you can fly the pants off the simulator and fly your co-axial pretty wel..

Take care.... Azzy

Re: new to helis and have questions

I am suprise at the Lama being cheaper....very suprised....the CX2 can be had for under £100 in the UK....the Lama has always been more expensive to me.

I have seen the CX2 with the 2.4 gig radio for around the £100 mark....I am sure I have.

Yeah, the retailer has it listed as in stock and ready to ship. That's why it seems odd to me that it would actually cost less then the Blade CX2. I think I'll go with the Lama V4 until I understand the basic controls and then move to the DragonFly4-1 or Honey Bee FP. Once I'm completely comfortable with a single rotor FP, I'll probably move to the Honey Bee King 2.

Re: new to helis and have questions

Hi again,

The lama sounds like a wise choice.

When your ready to jump, I'd look at going straight to CP like the HB king 2 or the Trex rather than another FP machine (which wont do much that the lama cant)

The reason that the king2 might be cheaper is because they could be selling it without the radio gear or lipo. That would take the cost down below the CX.

Take care... Azzy

I'm no expert, but I first bought the Lama V4 and found it to be very poor quality and stability. I then purchased a Blade CX2 and realized how bad the Lama was!
