Looking for a Heli(Semi-newbie)

Hello all. I found this site because I am looking to get another heli. Right now I have a Blade CX. I love that thing to death but I feel that I am ready to step up. I am asking you guys for your suggestions. I am not looking to get into any 3D stuff now, but it is a posibility for down the road.

Re: Looking for a Heli(Semi-newbie)

Quite a few folks like the TRex and for less money there is the Blade CP. If you want to go for glow the Raptor 30 is a pretty good machine for the price and the parts are fairly cheap. Browse around and look at prices. If you're lucky enough to be around a place where people fly these things you might do some gawking to see what you favor and what their owners think of them. I'm partial to the glow engines, but if I win the lottery I'm gonna get a turbine.

Re: Looking for a Heli(Semi-newbie)

Hi Vermillion,

Welcome to the Forums

In my opinion, it depends on 2 things.

1. How much space you have.

2. How much backup you have.

If you have lots of space and a club nearby to join then I would seriously consider joining the club and getting something like a raptor or sceadu.

If you dont have lots of space or backup say only a park then I would look at a T-Rex 450xl or maybe SE if you budget can handle it. The reason for that is a nitro sized machine is normally big needs a lot of space to fly.

Hope this helps... Azzy

Yeah...backup is important....I have a rule that if I break my helicopter it costs about one third its original price (just the helicopter...not the engine or radio gear) in spare parts replacement....so the bigger the helicopter, the more it can cost to repair.

I really like the TRex helicopter....its quite small but well made and the spare parts are not going to cost so much.

I do like Nitro helicopters too....they are usually a bit larger and are more easy to fly....but as model helicopters get larger they are potentially more dangerous too...do look at the safety issues.

Re: Looking for a Heli(Semi-newbie)

Ok thanks for the replies. Right now I fly in my families factory. It is about 300ft long and 100ft wide with about a 15-20ft celing. I am tring to get into the electrics so the nitros are out. Right now I have been looking at the Venom Night rangers, and the Blade Cp. Another question that I have is would you guys recommend getting a RTF or and ARF and buy my own raido? I was thinking either JR or Futaba if that matters.

Well depends on what you want to do long term.....if you are bitten by the bug then get a better radio system by all means....the new 2.4 ghz system like the DX6 would be a good bet.....the cheaper end helis have fairly good radios but for better flexibility a better radio and receiver is a must...as is a good gyro.

Re: Looking for a Heli(Semi-newbie)

Ok. I think I just have a few more questions. One is my dad just recently baught a Blade Cp. He crashed it and now it does not fly at all. So we were going to take it to the local shop to have it gone over and get it back into flying condition. Would that be a good second one or is there something else that I should look for? He said that he will fix it up if I would like to take over it. And I have been hearing alot about the Honeybee. Is that a good one like the Cp(I say good one because the local shop told me that all others come no where near the Cps. But I am alittle hard to believe that because all they sell are the Eflites.). I found a few dragonflies on ebay that are RTF. Is there any major problems with those? Thanks for all the help.

Re: Looking for a Heli(Semi-newbie)

Hi there,

I dont really know the blade CP but as far as can figure, its smaller than T-rex size. It should be fine to use. There is a guy who flies something similar at the flyins that I go to and he has great fun with it. (this guy is a champion pilot) I wouldnt recommend ARF because getting and building your own heli teaches you what makes them work and how to set them up.

If I was you, Id get the blade set up again and look towards a T-Rex to fly once your used to the blade. The T-rex can compete many nitros for performance so Id say this is the way to go.

Hope this is of some help
