awwwww nooo

just had my first breakage.

was flying my heli in the lounge and have noticed that flying in small spaces gives you a fai bit of wind to deal with. then i had one of my not so great ideas. what if i go up higher ad get out of the ground efect zone. so i give it a bit more throttle and lift a little higher and great. the ride smoothed out a fair bit. so now im floating around about 5 foot above the solid stuff and all of a sudden one of those gusts comes along (wind from the blades bouncing off the wall i guess) and it sends my heli floating towards where im sitting (it was ok when i was a foot off the ground lol) and it gets closer and my little laggy electric isnt moving forwards enough to counter it.

then all of a sudden its at that weird angle that makes us noobs lose orientation
i drop back on the throttle to try bring it lower to drop it down to a familiar angle. and oh bugger im falling towards the arm of the couch next to me. go forwards qui..... tail hits the couch and my precious heli hits the deck. i pick it up and oh no the thingy the blades attatched to (exact thought) came off on one side. i take it to the table and pop it back on.

and there im sitting thinking hey this chopper is pretty indestructable. after a crash like that i only had to pop that on, Cool!. i take the heli back into the lounge and plonk it down and then go to start it up and all good so far, hey wait. why is the tail going the wrong way?? it usualy wants to spin clockwise.
i think nothing else of it and continue to spin up. then i notice it doing more odd things, so i spin down and go to pick it up.

i pick it up by the tail shaft and all of a sudden the tail shaft bends one way when i pick it up. yup i stuffed the tail boom. now i have the joy of going to the LHS to spend money i dont have. then i get to basicly rebuild the chopper on its new main frame tail boom assembly

sucks to be noob

Re: awwwww nooo

I give you credit for flying it indoors! I tried, but gave up when skidding across the carpet was enough to put the fear of god into me. I vowed to only fly indoors when I was a lot better! Trouble is, I'm too scared to fly it outdoors now as well. I see it go up and think of all that money I might have to spend if I crash. Trouble is, as good as a sim is, it isn't the same as real flight.

Oh decisions decisions!

Re: awwwww nooo

well i just spent a hour dodgeying my heli back to gether. i bought a new carbon rod for my tail boom and then eyeballed out approx 300mm and cut it with a skill knife blade lol. soldered the tail motor back on and lined the tail rotor back up to vertical.

now i take it outside and holy fcuk it flys better than before. some of the wobble is gone and i can hold a real hover (in one spot) for much longer and im flying about 5 foot from the ground. had one more crash but nothing broke (soft dirt landing :P) i think that since i have crashed my heli and had to fix it some of the fear of crashing is gone.

oh yea while i was replacing the tail boom i also decided to go arround and fix any other things. turns out my 4 in 1 was mounted wrong. it was too far forward and not sticking to the rear bit of mounting tape

Re: awwwww nooo

I'm still waiting for my new carbon rod for the tail fin and will then have the fun of drilling out the stub of the old one (without trashing the boom). It should arive today, so hopefully will be flying again this weekend.

I was looking at the prices of spare parts for the 'Bee and am amazed at how cheap everything is. Every major structural component is only about £5. It goes a long way to remove the worrying about breaking it, though I never like breaking anything.

Have you removed the weights off the flybar as well? I should think that would liven it up as well.
