HELP!!! i have stumped the hobby shop!

Ok, first of all I think this place is great and I want to thank you guys for all your help in advance.

I have a serious problem. I bought this dragonfly on ebay that has the brushless upgrade, but it had no radio. I went down to the local hobby shop and got a radio and li-poly pack for it. The person that set this up, set it up really wierd. It has 2 speed controlers, one for the brushless and one for the tail. i have had to replace the tail motor twice and the speed controler for the tail once. I put in a new gyro as well. the problem that i am having is that it takes like 2-3 min for the tail to kick in and start working and when it does it is not in sync with the main blades. it used to be, but now for some reason they are not talking to each other. I have noticed on the hummingbirds that they have ONE speed controler that does everything. could that be my problem? and if so, how come it would work before? ok here is what i have... the second speed controler that is controling the rear motor WAS as GWS 2Amp/4-8cell ICS50, NOW its a Greatplanes Electrifly c-10 micro high frequency ESC w/BEC. The brushless is a RZ-Micro heli v.2. the only visible markings on the old gyro is a sticker that says CSM. the new gyro is the Century micro piezo gyro.

Any help would be great! Thanks for your guy's time...

Dano

Hi Dano

First let me say that I don't have a dragonfly heli but I did own a piccolo heli. This used the same main and tail motors as the Dragonfly to control the main rotor and the tail rotor.

I have only ever heard of one succesfull attempt at getting the 2 motors to run off seperate electric speed controllers and then it was a short lived thing. this person then had to install a picobaord and this imediatly sorted his problems out.

The problem you have is getting them to match the power to tail motor to counter the torque from the main rotor and this takes a good deal of electronic work.

The best thing I can say to you is to get yourself a picoboard and run the tail and main through this the fact that it is designed to deal with the tail and the main rotors can only save you time and money in the long run and short. The picoboard can even come with a gyro and it has also on the picopro board the ability to take a heading hold gyro.

The system your employing at the moment is gaurenteed to cause you great problems. Unless the heli you use has a driven tail from the main rotor motor.

sorry can't help you more.
Regards
Darren.

(buy a picoboard and it should make your life more enjoyable)

first off i want to say thanks for your help.

The question i have for you is will that pico board handle the control of a brushless motor? i would be willing to go to a single speed controler as long as it will support the brushless

The piccolo pro picboard will handle a brushless motor as far as I know, Hang on....................I have juat Phoned Midland helicopters and they assured me that the pro Picoboard can and does use the Hacker brushless motor. So YES it is capable of useing the brushless motors.

Hope this helps,
Regards
Darren.

i have 4 micro ikarus heli's that run brushless motors and have seperate main tail controllers with no problems
the pro board will run a brushless motor but you will need a seperate controller and a Y cable on the throttle channel

i think your main problem is that the that the razor v2 is really powerful and to get the tail to keep up i run hornet FP CF blades or you can Cut down the plastic ones
http://mainehomeproducts.com/images/bladecut.JPG
in my cobra1 setup the one on the left
http://mainehomeproducts.com/images/wcobrafleet1.JPG
with a stock tail i use a gws brushed tail in replacement
http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/gws...0b_1006018.htm
and have not replaced the tail in 18 runs on 3 cell li-poly 1200 packs fingers crossed
im running a hacker B20-36s with castle creations controller with a csm 200 gyro and a schultze 105he speed controller for the tail motor
ive been running this setup for about 1 year now with good luck

the cobra 2 has the razor v2 with an castle creations controller and a 240 gyro ,schultze 105he on the tail with hornet FP CF blades
it is also important to get a gyro that has HH heading hold otherwise i think you need a computer radio to adjust the mixing
you can run a brushless off a piccoboard see here
http://www.helihobby.com/html/separate_electronics.html
there is a schematic you can enlarge at the bottom of the page
hope it helps

keep it in the air

Nice one turco,
Some nice information posted. Had a good read myself and learnt lots more. These little electrics sure have gotten more user freindly since I had my piccolo.
I just may get another micro now I know about these seperates.

I did though contact a very reputable heli dealer here in the UK just to confirm that the picoboard pro can use brushless motors and had it confirmed. I just hope that they weren't palming me off with dud info. The last thing I want to do is give out bad advice.

Anyway thanks again for that.
regards
Darren

Daz(DJLFlapper)

you must have read the post before i edited it sorry
you can run of the piccoboard as i have but you do still need a seperate controller for the brushless motor
you basicly hook it up the same but you need to add a y cable to the throttle channel on the reciever and you send one side of the y to the new controller cutting the power wire to the brushless controller for it is powered seperately should work fine mine did but ive gone totally brushless know except for my Moth setup which has an Orion elite modified motor on the piccoboard

keep it in the air
