tail problems

Well I basically have to buy a new hawk pro kit. I was flying yesterday and went down.(HARD). I was actually flying some 3D and was so excited. I brought the helo in to refuel, but when I switch it from norm mode to SW1 or 3D mode, I get a lot of tail movement. ( not wobble) The tail keeps wanting to move torward the right and not sure how to fix it. But after I refilled and made a few adjustments, I was flying in norm mode and switch to SW1 and that tail swung around on me and then I was blinded by the sun and lost cordination and watch my hawk cream to the ground. Extremely upset, I was down so good and that was my first 3D move. If anyone has info on my tail problem please help.

Re: tail problems

Seems to me that it could be one of several factors

Gyro not in heading hold mode and the linkage is not set for non heading hold

Binding on the tail linkage

Or something binding and dragging down the battery voltage to the point that the gyro has resett itself in flight..

Possibly damage to the gyro and or the servo after the hard landing..

What headspeed were you running as its not uncommon after a hard landing to upsett the mechanical links (bend them slightly) and affect headspeed

Is the gyro pad still intact and not splitting

Did you change the feathering spindle after coming down hard if not I'd put my money on that first.. The standard Hawk spindle is crap much better to get the upgrade for the Hawk Pro

Unhappy Re: tail problems

Hi, very sorry about the accident! What radio are you running? When I was setting up the Raven for Idle-up 1 and Idle-up 2 (3D) (Futaba 9chps) the instructions said something about seperate gyro settings. I didn't go there because it's complicated.
I was up this morning and tried to fly with I-U1 and it felt fine though I'm always on edge when trying tests. I-U2 (3D) went well too but nervous with using more throttle. The gyro kept the tail in check on all 3 settings.
After hearing your experience I'm about to wet my pants cause it brings back nightmares of the near fatal for both Raven and myself.
I hope with the help of your friends here on Helifever can figure a probable cause.
I recommend keeping a log book! This will bring to mind any oddities that were fixed or being worked through. Copter death's are very tragic as they are so expensive to rebuild or replace. Radio gear that comes out is questionable till checked over thoroughly.
Downtime is the most painful I find.
Jim

Re: tail problems

What about tail rotor trim? I know that in throttle hold the trim can alter depending on what you have done regarding setting the radio up.....I know you mentioned idle ups of course.....but try switching idle ups (without starting the engine) and watch the trim settings...assuming you have a digital type radio.

As for gyro modes...my gyro is a basic Heading Hold type so I cant help there.
