Question just got

I got a hawk pro for x-mas. I also have a walkera 35 electric. I need help with my hawk. I cannot get it started? I will be turning it over and I think it becomes flooded, be cause the electric motor will not turn the engine over. It has the toki .40 engine. So if anyone has any input for me please send it. Thanks.
Brent

Re: just got

i know its a pain but you might want to pull the glow plug and verify that it is flooded.if flooded, pull fuel line off and spin over with starter until fuel has cleared out.check the carb and make sure that the barrel is only openned a little bit(1/32-1/16"). also if it wont start check the remote glow for proper instal and good connections i have one from century on my sport and have found it pulled past the spring(sometimes happens when installing it on the glow plug)make sure your carb needle is set to the manufacturers recomended turns. BE CERTAIN THAT THE THROTTLE SERVO IS FUNCTIONING IN THE PROPER DIRECTION,(idle and wide open not reversed)hold the rotor head while starting and dont let go until you know all is ok, that way if something is wrong you can pull the fuel line with your other hand to kill the motor.
the pro looks like a great bird let me know what yu think of it when you get it going. im running the os 32 and find it underpowered, if the 40 works for you i might think about uprading.oh yeh, make sure that you have good voltage going to the starter. best of luck and let me know how it goes!!!

Re: just got

I finally got it going. That engine with the exhaust it comes with, is actually pretty quit (toki .40). It was windy today so was not able to fly, basically just getting the motor broke in. But a problem I did have trying to get it started, was that the nut that hold the cooling fan on came off twice.( I used the red lock tight). I hope to try again tomorrow. It is a lot different than a shogun.

Re: just got

I have the Sport version of the Hawk....its a great heli...the Pro can only be better.

The replys before cover everything.....another point is: just before pressing the starter button....gently rotate the starter shaft...(anti clockwise I think) this is to check the cylinder on the engine is not full of fuel....otherwise you could bend the con rod within the engine....rotate a few times to check.....have fun.

Arrow Re: just got

Hey, welcome to the Hawk Family! Got a Hawk Pro as well, awesome machine. Funny enough, had the same problem with my cooling fan nut, only thing is, came off in the air, followed by my very first REAL auto-rotation (not on the simulator that is). I also battled initially to start the motor (ASP 36 being flooded) and I think the repeated cranking with the electr starter loosens the lock nut if not properly tightned. So how do you tighten it without that "purple piston-locking tool" they show in the instructions??

I took a piece of hard wood, cut it to size to fit in the intake (carb removed obviously). It fitted into the slot in the crankshaft, and prevents the crank from turning, without damaging it. Just dont use ANY METAL object in there, or you'll end up with a stuffed motor. I think this method works better than the piston-locking tool that fits in the glow plug hole, in the sence that with the tool, you still put quite a lot of pressure / strain on the conrod (which you know has brass bushes). With the wooden one I used, no stress on the conrod, as you stop the shaft that the nut goes on!!

Just make sure to clean the intake properly before fitting the carb again, or you might leave the odd wooden splinter in there (which I don't think can do much harm anycase).

So, good luck and enjoy that heli!

Frikkie

Re: just got

Hi Frikkie, hows tricks? I flew my Hawk for the first time in ages today...bit windy and getting cold.

I am getting low on fuel, need to order a load from the UK. Got a new job as well...start next month so everything is a bit hectic. Its a 'fitter' job...working on the real thing!!!! Sikorsky 61's ....they belong to a contract outfit which is working for the Armed Forces....cant believe I got a job...I am not alone though...another guy from work has got a job too...so we are like starting from square one. Neither of us know anything about real helis...but we are keen and will learn.

Started tinkering with an engine that could be good for my Hirobo sceadu evo...which is 30 size...the engine is an Enya 35. The Sceadu is a lovely machine which flys very well so I have heard.

Hows your Hawk Pro doing? do tell me your news....I am very interested...we guys who are out on our own...more or less...need to keep in touch

Rob

Lightbulb Re: just got

Hey Rob, thanks for replying!

CONGRATS with the new job, I now ur gonna enjoy it. My heli is also grounded as from today. You know that "exit pipe" on the muffler... somehow it came loos and fell off. Now its noisy as hell and you wont believe the mess... oil EVERYWHERE. Luckily I ordered a few things from Century (including a tuned pipe).

If you have read my other thread regarding service from Century, you'll understand why I think I'm gonna be grounded a while. You don't perhaps now what I can do to get a response from the Century Company. Tell you, it's really frustrating if you get grounded because you can't get spares...... and you haven't even lobbed the heli!!!

Rob I tell you the CCPM conversion is amazing. Since I converted, she is so stable and predictable, it gives you loads of confidence to start trying funny stuff. but now I MUST get carbon blades and some other upgrades, otherwise I'll either fold or break them. Amazing to see how far the wooden blades bend down in auto's. I better just wait untill Century sends me the spares (or reply to start with), otherwhise I'm stuck, no spares for them here in SA.

Hey, don't let the cold scare you off, put on a nice and warm coat and send your baby tumbling!!! (stay out of the rorotwash of course - that'll be cold!!!!)

Later Frikkie

Re: just got

Hi there....see what you mean about Centurys customer service...its far better to ring them. I dont really want parts from the UK becuase it gets expensive....but trying to get them direct is a pain....TWO MONTHS postage!!!! what the hell is that about....I just want simple good old airmail....its only for a few silly little items.

If it gets silly I will look around for another heli make....I have yet to get the Sceadu flying....very popular heli this one....spares are easy to get and not too badly priced either.
