The last time I had to replace the mane gear I did it the way you described. And your right getting those bearings and races back in can be a real b****. I was just thinking if I gotta tear it down to do the one-way I might as well replace the main shaft bearings also. Its been about 5 months since I last serviced them and their the about a year old. Guess I just got a little lazy about the maintenance on my 36.
