Your esc will cut off the motor when the battery voltage hits a certain point like nine volts. If your battery if fried then it will drop below this point as soon as you load it and then the esc will cutoff. I had a couple of batteries do this when I didn't watch them close on a hot day and they puffed. Now they drop their voltage as soon as I put a load on them.
